Scissor lifts are powerful tools that help people work safely at height. They are common on construction sites and in large warehouses. Using one feels simple, but safety must always come first. Following the right steps keeps you and those around you safe.
Use the following guidelines for safe scissor lift operation.
Know the controls:
Before you move the lift, get to know it. A trained person must show you how to use all the controls. Practice raising, lowering, and driving the lift in a clear area. Learn where the emergency stop buttons are. You should be able to operate the lift smoothly without looking at the controls. Never let someone use the lift without proper training.
Inspect the machine first:
A quick check can prevent a big problem. Before you start work, look the lift over. Check for any leaks, loose parts, or damage. Ensure the guardrails are secure. Test the controls and the alarms. Look at the ground where you will be driving. Check for holes, slopes, or objects that could make the lift tip over. If you find anything wrong, report it and do not use the lift.
Wear your harness:
A personal fall arrest system is your best friend in the air. This includes a full-body harness and a lanyard. Always attach the lanyard to the designated anchor point on the lift. Do this before you raise the platform. The harness will stop a fall if you slip or the lift moves unexpectedly. Never lean over or climb on the guardrails.
Watch for overhead hazards:
Be aware of what is above you. Look for power lines, pipes, and ceiling fixtures. A common accident is the lift platform touching live electrical wires. This is very dangerous. Always keep a safe distance from any electrical sources. Know the height of your lift and the height of the obstacles around you.
Drive on solid ground:
Only operate the lift on a surface that is stable and strong. Do not drive on uneven ground or surfaces that might give way. Be very careful on ramps. Move slowly and avoid sudden turns. Do not push the lift beyond what the manufacturer says it can handle. High winds can make the lift unsteady, so do not use it in bad weather.
