PASS THE MIC is an Immigrant and Refugee Youth Music Camp that provides students (ages 14 and up) with free, high-quality and culturally responsive music education and mentorship from a group of experienced musicians in the local Portland music scene. Students will gain invaluable encouragement and experience in expressing themselves musically and artistically to their peers and their communities, and they’ll learn how to collaborate creatively with each other. The goal of our camp is to decrease isolation and find new ways to connect youth from inside and outside of mainstream American culture, allowing room for these students to carve out their own expressive safe space and to share it in their own creative terms.
When: Monday, July 29th, through Friday, August 2nd, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. (On the evening of Friday, August 2nd, we’ll have a free showcase concert starting at 6 p.m., and all campers will be invited to play their songs for the community.)
Where: Hosford Middle School (2303 SE 28th Pl, Portland, OR 97214) -- accessible by the #2 bus line)
Cost: PASS THE MIC is absolutely free, and we’ll provide lunch and refreshments. If you want to play guitar, bass or drums, we’ll even provide the instruments. (If you have another instrument that you want to play, bring it! All musical ideas, types, genres welcome!)
The camp is open to immigrant and refugee youth of all genders ages 14 and up. Absolutely no musical experience is required -- no matter who you are, by the end of the week, you will be able to perform your own original music!
You’ll receive personalized instruction from some of the top independent musicians in Portland. You’ll form your own bands, write your own songs, and make the music you want to make!
